Mettupalayam constituency's 8th Assembly election delivered a clear winner with Mr.M.Chinnaraj of ADMK winning with a margin of 19.65%. The only notable contestant was from the DMK was Mr.M.Mathiyan. The Polling percentage increased 17% to 76.28%. MGR formed the government with his ailing health by contesting from hospital. ADMK won the election in the state with a clear margin in alliance with the Congress party. Indira Gandhi forged a strategic alliance in Tamil Nadu noting Mr.MGR's star power and Charisma. The ADMK and Congress Alliance won 195 seats fo the 234 seats in Tamil Nadu.
