2011 Elections Analysis

The local assembly elections in May 2011 turned out to be a rout for the AIADMK with the same candidate from the 2006 elections. The major parties AIADMK and DMK nominated the same candidates Mr.O.K.Chinnaraj (OKC) from AIADMK and Mr.B.Arun Kumar from DMK. The margin this time however was 25775 votes in favour for AIADMK. The previous elections gave AIADMK only a slender margin of 142 votes and this time due to broader issues such as the 2G scam and other DMK land grab issues led to a landslide victory that came about with the alliance with Vijaykanth's DMDK which took a large part of the last assembly elections. The absence of Raja the MP for this seat was also a contributing factor. The AIADMK candidate was also from the popular and majority Vokkaliga community and the victory bells were only a matter of time. The other surprise was Mr.Nanda Kumar of BJP who bagged 5600 votes shows the presence of BJP in this seat. This is the seventh time AIADMK has won from this seat. It is true to say that this seat is very close to be a AIADMK fort.

The Election is a defining moment in Dravidian Politics as one of the senior leaders in DMK may bow out after this election handing over the mantle to his successor, who in comparison to the opposition rival and his predecessor is much less experienced and has been overshadowed by the large figurehead of Mr.M.Karunanidhi. The dravidian party tussle comes to the show this April 13. The alliances are almost decided.

This election as many state is a very crucial one as there appears to be a situation that either of the major parties may win or lose with a big margin. There are many organisations that are educating the common man on the need and importance of voting in an election and particularly this one.

Mettupalayam's 2006 Assembly elections witnessed a record voter turnout of 74.23% a 10 % increase compared to the last 2001 elections and the highest since the 1991 elections. This election was very interesting with a very close result of only 142 votes that gave the AIADMK victory. The AIADMK candidate Mr.O.K.Chinnaraj hailing from Oosur near Tholampalayam village in the Karamadai area contested this assembly election for the first time against the Mr.B.Arun Kumar (MLA - 1996, Candidate - 1991, 2001, 2006) with the campaigning prowess.
