Indian captain Jhulan Goswami exults after dismissing England's Jenny Gunn in the first one-dayer in Bangalore on Friday.

Bangalore: Close on the heels of the Indian men retaining their No. 1 Test status at Kolkata, Jhulan Goswami's women continued the glad tidings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday.

The Indian women's team defeated the World Cup champion England by 35 runs in the opening ODI of the five-match series to gain a 1-0 lead.

Chasing India's 199 for five in 50 overs, England was bowled out for 164 in 45 overs as spearhead Jhulan and left-arm spinner Gauhar Sultana grabbed three wickets each while the visitors remained leaden-footed at the crease.

During the flawed chase, England lost its opener Sarah Taylor cheaply as Jhulan rapped the pads and captain Charlotte Edwards (20) was left stranded while trying to cart Amita Sharma. England briefly thrived on Ebony Brent's sparkling 64 (83b, 10x4).

Ebony cut loose against Nooshin Ali Khadeer as the off-spinner erred in her length. Ebony struck four fours in a Nooshin over with the drive and pull being her favourite shots. However Ebony's dismissal, falling leg before to Gauhar in the 26th over and Lydia Greenway's (35) run-out during the final stretch, derailed England while the tiring Indian fielders found their spark through Rumeli Dhar's diving catch that ended Katherine Brunt's tenure.

Accurate attack

Earlier, opting to bat on winning the toss, India struggled to break free against an accurate England attack backed by sharp fielding and some vociferous ‘Barmy Army' chants from the visiting England colts' team from the stands.

Anagha Deshpande nicked seamer Katherine and Mithali Raj was involved in two mix-ups that led to the run-outs of Thirush Kamini and Anjum Chopra.

The collapse continued as Rumeli Dhar poked and perished to Jenny Gunn and at 63 for four, India required a partnership to stabilise and propel the innings.

Mithali (62, 116b, 2x4) and Priyanka Roy (69 n.o., 98b, 6x4) complied with the need of the situation and shared a 100-run partnership for the fifth-wicket.

Mithali remained watchful and with Charlotte swapping her bowlers and packing the off-side, the former Indian captain bided her time. Mithali eventually fell while trying to force the pace and India paused one run short of 200 though it proved adequate in the end.

The scores: India: Anagha Deshpande c Jenny b Katherine 14 (16b, 3x4), Thirush Kamini (run out) 28 (55b, 4x4), Mithali Raj c Lydia b Charlotte 62 (116b, 2x4), Anjum Chopra (run out) 2 (2b), Rumeli Dhar c Sarah b Jenny 0 (1b), Priyanka Roy (not out) 69 (98b, 6x4), Amita Sharma (not out) 12 (13b).
